Yesterday was a girl standing with her family in the light of early dawn, the first of her name to ever do so, all her packed belongings stacked waiting in the red dirt road. Yesterday was their anxiety and their excitement - measured out in equal, shining parts. Yesterday was birds beneath the old trees and the particular quiet of campus before classes begin, stretching out before us like our morning shadows. Everything changes from here, the other, older girls at her new residence warned. Yesterday was remembering, in a sudden start, how precious - and hard-won - learning can be.
